Review: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Just finished reading Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. Though not as awesome and scary as Orwell's 1984 or Huxley's Brave New World it still holds its own in the fascinating genre of dystopian fiction. It keeps women and their rights at the center of the story as it focuses on a future where their sole function is to breed.
The handmaids are a group of women who are assigned to men whose wives are not capable of producing a child. They're forced into doing this because if they don't, they'll be executed or shipped off to the colonies to die of radiation. It's the story of one woman's fight against oppression and to gain the freedom to make her own decisions. The image below is a quote that keeps repeating in the book and it translates to "Don't let the bastards grind you down". A war cry of sorts that keeps her sane in her silent fight against those who oppress her. If you're a fan of dystopian literature then this is definitely a must-read book from the genre.
My Rating: 3.5/5
